MOTION:MCQUIGG May 6,1997 <br />Regular Meeting <br />SECOND:JENKINS Res,No.97-365 <br />RE:PROCLAIM MAY 10.-iS,1997 AS SAFE KIDS WEEK <br />ACTION:APPROVED <br />WHEREAS,each year more than 6,900 of America’s children die from <br />unintentional injuries while more than 50,000 are permanently disabled;and <br />WHEREAS,citizens of Prince William County can significantly reduce these <br />numbers locally through pro-active prevention measures;and <br />WHEREAS,the proper use of car safety seats,safety belts,bicycle helmets,and <br />smoke detectors may in itself be lifesaving;and <br />WHEREAS,the Prince William Community SAFE KIDS Coalition has been <br />established to combat this epidemic;and <br />WHEREAS,the National SAFE KIDS Campaign promotes childhood injury <br />prevention by uniting diverse groups into state and local coalitions,developing innovative <br />educational tools and strategies,initiating public policy changes,promoting new technology,and <br />raising awareness through the media;and <br />WHEREAS,the Prince William Community SAFE KIDS Coalition,along with <br />hundreds of communities nationwide,will be conducting childhood injury prevention activities <br />around the theme of SAFE KIDS Gear Up during National SAFE KIDS Week 1997;and <br />WHEREAS,the Prince William Community SAFE KIDS Coalition is active in <br />the campaign and has planned special childhood injury prevention activities for the week of <br />May 10-18,1997 in an effort to reach all interested persons with important child safety <br />information; <br />NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Prince William Board of <br />County Supervisors does hereby proclaim the week of May 10-18,1997 as “National SAFE <br />KIDS Week”and calls upon all residents in this great Prince William County to join us in <br />supporting the efforts and activities of the Prince William Community SAFE KIDS Coalition to <br />prevent childhood injury.
