MOTION:JENKINS May 6,1997 <br />Regular Meeting <br />SECOND:HILL Res.No.97-358 <br />RE:PROCLAIM MAY 15,1997 AS NATIONAL PEACE OFFICERS’ <br />MEMORIAL DAY AND THE WEEK OF MAY 11 -17,1997 AS <br />NATIONAL POLICE WEEK <br />ACTION:APPROVED <br />WHEREAS,the administration of criminal justice is a major concern to the <br />everyday lives of the citizens of Prince William County;and <br />WHEREAS,the most visible front line of the criminal justice system,our law <br />enforcement officers,from the newest recruit to the oldest veteran,carry with them the <br />awesome responsibility of making often instantaneous and irrevocable decisions affecting <br />human life and safety,property rights and personal liberty;and <br />WHEREAS,Prince William County is blessed with professional law <br />enforcement officers,all highly qualified men and women,who,by temperament and training <br />are fully prepared to meet the challenges of changing social conditions;and <br />WHEREAS,it is proper and fitting that we give special recognition to,and <br />remember those law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty from <br />Prince William County,the Commonwealth of Virginia and our Nation,as well as those who <br />continue to courageously and conscientiously maintain a delicate balance between the liberty of <br />the individual and a high degree of social protection;and <br />WHEREAS,by Proclamation Number 3537,dated May 6,1963, <br />John F.Kennedy,President of the United States,designated May 15,1963 as National Peace <br />Officers’Memorial Day,and the week of May 15 as National Police Week; <br />NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Prince William Board of <br />County Supervisors,that the week of May 11,1997 be observed as NATIONAL POLICE <br />WEEK,and May 15 be observed as NATIONAL PEACE OFFICERS’MEMORIAL DAY; <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the citizens of Prince William County, <br />Virginia make a special effort to let those officers from the various law enforcement agencies <br />who,night and day,make our County a safe place to live,work and play,know that they are <br />appreciated.
