MOTION:JENKINS March 4,1997 <br />Regular Meeting <br />SECOND:HILL Res,No.97-155 <br />RE:PROCLAIM -MARCH 1997 -“IRISH-AMERICAN HERITAGE <br />MONTH” <br />ACTION:APPROVED <br />WHEREAS,by 1776 nearly 300,000 natives of Ireland had emigrated to the <br />United States;and <br />WHEREAS,following the victory at Yorktown over the English,a French <br />Major General reported that Congress owed its existence,and America,possibly her <br />preservation,to the fidelity of the Irish;and <br />WHEREAS,at least 8 signers of the Declaration of Independence were of Irish <br />origin;Charles Thomson,born in Ireland,was Secretary of the Continental Congress;Irish-born <br />James Hoban designed the White House,the State and War offices,and assisted in the building <br />of the United States Capitol;and <br />WHEREAS,on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1995,over 200 community parades <br />honored the patron saint of Ireland;and <br />WHEREAS,more than 480 institutions of higher learning in the United States <br />offer courses in Irish studies;and the Irish and Irish descendants have contributed greatly to the <br />enrichment of all aspects of life in the United States,including the military and governmental <br />service,science,education,art,agriculture,business,industry,and athletics;and <br />WHEREAS,in the 1980 census,40,700,000 individuals in the United States <br />claimed to be of Irish descent;and <br />WHEREAS,the men and women of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, <br />Lieutenant Colonel John A.Dowd,Division No.1,Prince William County,represent the Irish- <br />American population in the County and will celebrate March 1997 as “Irish-American Heritage <br />Month”; <br />NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the Prince William Board of <br />County Supervisors does hereby proclaim the month ofMarch 1997 as “Irish-American Heritage <br />Month”in Prince William County. <br />Votes: <br />Ayes:Barg,Caddigan,Hill,Jenkins,McQuigg,Seefeldt,Thompson,Wilbourn <br />Nays:None <br />Absent from Vote:None <br />Absent from Meeting:None <br />For Information: <br />Ancient Order of Hibernians <br />CERTIFIED COPY <br />Clerk t~the Boat’d
